Elisabeth Fritzl was born in the town of Amstetten, Lower Austria, on April 6, 1966. She was considered by many as a sweet and gentle girl, despite being extremely quiet and reserved. Her shyness was due to the physical and sexual abuse she had suffered from her father since the age of 11, so she had practically no friends and never talked about boys or relationships.

On the afternoon of August 28th, 1984, the day of Elisabeth’s disappearance, Josef had called his daughter to help him fix the door the of family’s cellar, located in the basement. As soon as they arrived, he forced the young woman inside and knocked her unconscious with an ether-soaked towel. That was Elisabeth Fritzl’s last sunny day, she would remain imprisoned under her own house for the next 24 years.

Not a father, a monster

In a few hours, Rosemarie noticed her daughter’s sudden disappearance and started looking for her until she called the police. But Josef had the perfect story: for all intents and purposes, Elisabeth had grown tired of her own life and run away to join a religious cult. It wouldn’t have been the first time.
